MATERIALS GUIDE

Choosing the Right Container Material

The material you choose for your container affects everything from product safety to shipping costs to shelf appeal. Here's how to decide between PET, HDPE, glass, and polypropylene.

Selecting the right container material is one of the most consequential decisions in product packaging. The wrong choice can lead to product degradation, shipping damage, regulatory issues, or unnecessary cost. Here's a practical guide to the four materials we work with most.

Glass Containers

Glass is the gold standard for chemical inertness. It doesn't react with contents, doesn't leach, and provides an excellent oxygen and moisture barrier. It's ideal for premium food products, hot-fill applications, vinegars, sauces, and anything where product purity is paramount. The trade-offs are weight and fragility — glass is heavy, increasing shipping costs, and it shatters on impact. Glass also offers unmatched shelf appeal; consumers perceive glass-packaged products as higher quality.

P.E.T. (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

PET is the lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It's crystal clear, FDA-approved for food contact, and offers good oxygen barrier properties. PET is up to 85% lighter than glass, which dramatically reduces shipping costs. It's ideal for beverages, sauces, condiments, and personal care products where visibility matters. PET is not suited for hot-fill applications (it can deform at high temperatures) and doesn't match glass's oxygen barrier, so it's not ideal for products with long shelf life that are sensitive to oxidation.

Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is the heat-resistant workhorse. It can withstand temperatures up to 275°F, making it the go-to for hot-fill applications — sauces, syrups, and heated products. PP is also chemically stable, BPA-free, and microwave-safe. It's typically opaque or translucent, so if product visibility is important, PP may not be the best choice. PP is considered one of the safest commercial plastics and is widely recyclable.

H.D.P.E. (High-Density Polyethylene)

HDPE is the most chemically resistant and environmentally stable plastic we offer. It's ideal for household chemicals, industrial cleaners, detergents, and agricultural products. HDPE is opaque, providing light protection, and requires significantly less energy to produce than alternatives like steel. It's the eco-conscious choice for industrial-scale containment. HDPE doesn't offer the clarity of PET, so it's not ideal when product visibility matters.

How to Choose

Start with these questions: Is your product food-grade? Does it need to be visible on the shelf? Will it be hot-filled? Is it chemically aggressive? How far does it need to ship? What's your budget per unit? If you're unsure, that's exactly what our sales team is here for — call (985) 781-7866 and we'll walk through your requirements.
